BP Completes Seven-Well Subsea Intervention Campaign at Deepwater Gunashli
BP completed a multi-well subsea intervention campaign at the Deepwater Gunashli section of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. The campaign covered seven subsea wells that had previously been considered difficult to access using traditional intervention methods.
The work started in the fourth quarter of 2025 and was completed approximately one month ahead of schedule. All intended goals were achieved in compliance with safety regulations.
The campaign marked the first deployment of riserless light well intervention (RLWI) technology in BP's operations in the Caspian region, using Oceaneering International's Blue Ocean Riserless Intervention System (BORIS), an advanced subsea mechanical wireline intervention system. The technology enabled access to subsea wells without the need for conventional drilling risers. It provided well control, pressure containment and subsea intervention capabilities throughout the campaign.
The well intervention activities were carried out from the subsea construction vessel Khankendi, which served as a light well intervention vessel with the RLWI system integrated onto it. A key element of the project was the installation and first-time use of a moonpool system aboard the Khankendi. Positioned near the vessel's centerline, the moonpool allows subsea equipment, remotely operated vehicles and intervention tools to be safely lowered directly to the seabed.
The campaign enabled efficient well surveillance. It helped identify opportunities for reservoir pressure management and production rate enhancement. BP previously said the goal of these operations was to increase oil production levels at ACG, maximize oil recovery from the reservoirs and extend the field's operational life.
