The Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta and Enhance Energy marked the start of construction on the Origins Carbon Capture Storage Hub near Clive, Alberta. Operations are due to begin in January 2027.

Natural Resources Canada says Origins is expected to be the largest carbon capture and storage project in Canada once it runs, and one of the largest CCS facilities worldwide.

Initial capacity is set at up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 stored permanently each year. The CO2 will come first from industrial facilities in Alberta's Industrial Heartland. The hub ties into the province's existing CO2 transportation network.

Enhance Energy runs the existing Clive carbon capture and storage project, which has permanently stored more than 9 million tonnes of CO2 since 2020, according to Natural Resources Canada.

Alberta's government selected Origins in 2022 as one of about two dozen proposed carbon-storage hubs cleared to move forward, World Oil reported, and the Enhance Energy project is among the first of that group to reach construction.

The permanent storage end of the chain sits at Clive, where captured volumes from Heartland emitters will be injected. Natural Resources Canada framed the ground-breaking as a joint federal and provincial event alongside the operator.
