JA Solar Ships First Modules for Masdar's 5.2 GW Solar-Plus-Storage Project in Abu Dhabi
JA Solar shipped the first batch of photovoltaic modules in July 2026 for Masdar's Round-the-Clock (RTC) project in Abu Dhabi, a 5.2 GW solar plant paired with 19 GWh of battery storage that is designed to supply 1 GW of baseload power daily.
The combination is the point. Solar output that stops at sunset is being contracted as firm capacity, with the battery block sized to carry the load through the night. The developer describes the installation as the largest and most technologically advanced solar-plus-storage project on the planet.
The project sits in the Al Dhafra area of Abu Dhabi and is built as an integrated renewable generation and storage system delivering clean power 24 hours a day.
Electricity from the plant is earmarked for demand growth tied to economic expansion and new artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to the release. Full operation is expected in 2027.
JA Solar was selected in 2025 as one of the preferred suppliers for a 3 GW module supply order for the project. Deliveries now underway draw on the company's DeepBlue line, which the release positions as a solution for large-scale renewable projects and energy infrastructure built around the requirements of AI computing.
For buyers of firm power, the structure matters more than the headline capacity. A 5.2 GW array feeding 19 GWh of batteries to yield 1 GW around the clock implies heavy oversizing of the generation side relative to the contracted output, the arrangement that converts an intermittent resource into something a data center operator can plan against.
JA Solar has also been working the measurement side of the same argument. At Intersolar Europe 2026 in Munich, the company and Deloitte jointly released a white paper titled Driving Greener Artificial Intelligence with the Green Token Indicator. The paper introduces green attributes into units of AI computation, shifting the frame from green electricity to greener computing, and proposes a measurable framework for assessing and managing the environmental impact of AI.
