Nigeria commissions 3 MW solar hybrid at Abuja university, plans national power complaints call centre
Nigeria's Federal Government has commissioned a 3 MW solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja, aimed at strengthening electricity supply for teaching, research and laboratory operations, according to Punch.
ThisDay reported that the installation pairs a 3.3 MW solar array with 3 MW of AC output capacity and 2 MWh of battery storage to cover critical loads outside solar hours. The project is intended to cut the university's diesel use and ease pressure on institutional budgets, ThisDay reported, citing the responsible minister.
The scheme also includes 388 streetlights installed on campus to improve illumination and security, with additional dark spots to be covered as battery capacity is expanded, according to ThisDay.
Separately, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe said the Federal Government is planning a national call centre where Nigerians can report electricity complaints for prompt resolution, according to The Times. BusinessDay reported the minister's statement that the initiative would create sustainable job opportunities for young Nigerians nationwide.
The Sun reported that the government also intends to set up a dedicated channel for reporting vandalism of critical electricity assets, to allow immediate action and remediation. Pulse reported that no launch date or telephone number for the centre has been announced.
