OMV Petrom, described as the largest integrated energy producer in South-Eastern Europe, will sponsor the construction of the Arena de Canotaj PETROM on Lake Pantelimon with EUR 1.7 million, taking its total rowing commitment to EUR 2.7 million.

The outlay sits against a company that reported annual crude oil and gas production of about 38 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2025. The sponsorship is directed at sport infrastructure rather than upstream or refining assets, and it is signed off by the executive responsible for the downstream business.

"Through this new sponsorship of EUR 1.7 million, OMV Petrom contributes to the development of the Arena de Canotaj PETROM, a project that can bring major international competitions to Romania and can support the next generations of athletes," said Radu Caprau, member of the Executive Board of OMV Petrom, according to Profit.ro. Caprau holds the Refining and Marketing portfolio on the board.

The first phase carries an estimated investment of about EUR 3.2 million, of which EUR 1.7 million comes from the OMV Petrom sponsorship and roughly EUR 1.5 million is covered by the Romanian Rowing Federation. Profit.ro described that EUR 1.5 million as the contribution of the national sporting structure.

Work will be phased across 2026 to 2028 and starts with a platform of approximately 10,000 square metres. That surface is the minimum required for international accreditation of the base and for hosting major rowing competitions.

Romania sits consistently at the top of world rowing but has no Olympic course homologated to international standards. Caprau framed the same gap directly: Romania has world-class rowing champions but does not yet have an internationally homologated Olympic base.

The facility would be the country's first Olympic rowing base built for international homologation. It is being developed with the support of the Pantelimon city hall, which was named alongside OMV Petrom when the project was announced.

"The Arena de Canotaj PETROM is a project that Romanian rowing has awaited for many years and which will fundamentally change the way we prepare and Romania's capacity to organise international competitions," said Elisabeta Lipa, President of the Romanian Rowing Federation.

The EUR 2.7 million running total reflects money allocated by the energy producer to the sport since 2024. From that year, OMV Petrom put EUR 1 million into the "Energie pentru Performanta" programme, aimed at identifying and developing future generations of Olympic rowing champions. More than 200 young athletes have already been brought into the programme, which supports national selection and the equipping of rowing centres.

For a producer at the 38 million boe scale, the arena spend is a downstream-branded community commitment rather than a capital allocation decision at asset level. The corporate name is attached to the venue itself, and the platform threshold determines whether the site can host accredited events at all.

The project was announced on the day of publication. Profit.ro carried the item on July 23, 2026, and Sport Clasic published its account the same day in its business sport section.
