Petrobras ADRs Rise 1.8% on Amapa Well That Bradesco BBI Sees Producing No Oil Before 2032
Petrobras ADRs gained as much as 1.84% before the US open after the company reported hydrocarbons at an exploratory well off Amapa, a find its own chief executive says is not yet commercial. PBRa rose 1.84% and PBR 1.79%, while PETR4 advanced 1.33% and PETR3 1.24% around 10:30 on August 17, 2026.
The announcement came after Friday's close on August 14, according to Money Times. Petrobras identified hydrocarbons in the Morpho well (1-BRSA-1405-APS) on block FZA-M-59, about 175 kilometres off the Amapa coast in 2,886 metres of water, in the Foz do Amazonas basin on Brazil's equatorial margin.
What the market bought is a timeline, not a barrel. Bradesco BBI's positive scenario puts a declaration of commerciality between 2029 and 2031, with first oil only between 2032 and 2036. The bank kept a neutral recommendation on PETR4 with a target price of BRL 53.
The appraisal work between now and then is substantial. Analysts estimate two to four additional appraisal wells may be needed, rising to four to six if the reservoir proves more complex. Petrobras said it will continue drilling to deepen the exploratory evaluation of the area, and there is no estimate of recoverable volumes and no confirmation of commerciality.
"It was a discovery, but it is not yet a commercial discovery," chief executive Magda Chambriard told Reuters. "We will continue the work there to see the commerciality". In a Monday interview she said there is oil and a discovery, but the quantity is still unknown.
The hydrocarbons were identified through electrical logs and indications observed in the rock during drilling, according to Petrobras. The company gave no further detail on the characteristics of the hydrocarbons found or the distance of the discovery intervals.
Petrobras holds 100% of block FZA-M-59 and operates it, having acquired the asset in the 11th ANP licensing round held in 2013 under the concession regime. XP notes the company's business plan foresees around USD 2.5 billion of investment in the equatorial margin and the drilling of 15 exploratory wells in the region.
The reserve-replacement logic runs on a similar clock. Chambriard said the find is a step forward in replacing reserves from 2034-2035, when the pre-salt is expected to peak before declining. Bradesco BBI takes the same view, arguing the equatorial margin could eventually complement pre-salt output and help mitigate a fall in national oil production after 2035. Gustavo Trotta, partner at Valor Investimentos, said the market had waited years for this discovery and that it lowers risk on the equatorial margin, with the pre-salt production peak expected in the 2030s.
Not every read is bullish on the near term. Marcos Praca, head of analysis at Zero Markets Brasil, called the news positive for the long term but premature for changing production, profit or company-value projections. Adriano Pires, an economist previously nominated to head Petrobras, warned it is early to assess the impact because there are no official data, and stressed the importance of speed in Ibama's environmental licensing.
Roberto Ardhengy, president of the Instituto Brasileiro do Petroleo, said the discovery confirms the geological theory of the region, valuable information given that most wells drilled are not commercially viable. The IBP, which represents Petrobras, ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, Shell and Equinor, said the find confirms very positive prospects for Brazil to produce oil and natural gas in other regions, reinforcing national energy security over the medium and long term. David Zylbersztajn, a former ANP director, said the discovery matters for adding reserves and gives Petrobras more confidence to keep drilling in the region.
The equatorial margin runs along the coast of northern and northeastern states and has been the subject of a dispute between the region's oil potential and environmental concerns tied to exploration. Politics arrived quickly: at an event in Ipero, Sao Paulo state, during a visit to the Aramar Nuclear Industrial Centre on Wednesday the 19th, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called Chambriard "queen of Brazil," comparing her to a powerful queen like that of Saudi Arabia after the equatorial margin discovery.
