Petrobras Says Tupi Passed 4 Billion Barrels of Oil Equivalent, a First for the Company
Petrobras said on Thursday the 13th that its Tupi asset, in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, reached cumulative production of 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe), the first asset in the company's history to hit that volume across 73 years of operation.
The threshold makes Tupi a rare reference point for ultra-deepwater economics. Few single offshore assets anywhere have delivered output at that scale from one development, and the figure was disclosed in the year the company completes 20 years of operation in the area, according to Estadao Conteudo.
Sustained rates explain how the cumulative total was reached. In 2025 the field again exceeded an average of 1 million barrels of oil per day, a level first recorded in 2019. Within the same field complex, the FPSO Cidade de Saquarema produced 148,900 barrels per day at Lula, in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin.
Tupi was the first pre-salt system to enter commercial production, in 2010, and required a new exploratory model plus pioneering technologies for ultra-deepwater operation. That engineering package is what turned a frontier play into a producing asset at industrial scale.
Sylvia Anjos, Petrobras director of Exploration and Production, said production at Tupi "inaugurated a new era for the world oil industry". Over 20 years, she said, the pre-salt layer revealed a unique combination of large reserves, high productivity, oil with a lower carbon footprint, and above-average efficiency.
Ownership is shared. Petrobras operates Tupi in partnership with Shell plc and Petrogal Brasil, with participation from Pre-Sal Petroleo S.A. (PPSA), which represents the Union in the Tupi Shared Reservoir. For international majors, that structure means the barrels behind the milestone flow to more than one balance sheet.
Tupi is not the only asset in the play. Buzios and Mero also sit in the pre-salt, the zone Petrobras characterises by high productivity and lower carbon intensity. The comparison matters for anyone modelling the cost curve of deepwater against onshore shale or mature offshore basins: the pre-salt has repeatedly produced assets that run above average efficiency rather than a single outlier.
The barrels also reach the open market through state-linked channels. PPSA holds its 8th spot auction on the 26th, offering 13.9 million barrels, with cargoes from Buzios scheduled for delivery between October and December. That volume gives refiners and trading desks a direct price signal on pre-salt crude rather than an inferred one.
For global capital allocators weighing ultra-deepwater against faster-cycle projects, the Tupi number is the cleanest available datapoint on what a single high-productivity offshore asset can deliver over a full development cycle: commercial start in 2010, a first pass above 1 million barrels per day in 2019, a repeat in 2025, and 4 billion boe cumulative.
