Sonangol Named Best Public Company of 2025 and Wins Transparency and ESG Award in Luanda
Sonangol took two awards at the Encontro Anual do Sector Empresarial Publico (E-SEP), the annual meeting of the state enterprise sector held on July 28, 2026 in Luanda: Best Public Company of 2025 and a separate prize for Transparency and ESG.
The event was organised by the Instituto de Gestao de Activos e Participacoes do Estado (IGAPE), the state asset and shareholding management institute. It ran under the theme of the state enterprise sector as a lever for economic development and the sustainability of public finances.
The judging criteria named by the organisers cover institutional performance, operational efficiency, innovation, quality of services delivered, transparency, and the adoption of good governance and sustainability practices. Output, reserves, and production volumes do not appear among the criteria described.
Both distinctions were collected by Gaspar Martins, chairman of Sonangol's board of directors. He described the exercise as an incentive for continuous improvement across public companies.
"It is a healthy initiative, positive competition, and in this way the public enterprise sector will improve over time," Martins said.
Martins also said the awards promote healthy competition among companies in the sector, contributing to stronger efficiency and quality in public management.
The gathering brought together decision-makers, managers and specialists in what organisers framed as a space for dialogue and the sharing of solutions for the sector.
According to the press note cited by Jornal Hora H, the distinction highlights the oil company's strategic role in economic and social development and its commitment to transparency, sustainability and good governance practices.
For investors tracking national oil companies, the scoring frame is the substance here. A state shareholder body ranking its own portfolio on transparency and ESG criteria, rather than on barrels, sets a public benchmark that can be repeated year on year and compared across state-owned entities. The award year cited is 2025, judged at a meeting held in 2026.
The governance angle also runs through the theme chosen for the meeting, which ties the performance of state companies directly to the sustainability of public finances. That framing places the state's dividend and fiscal exposure to its enterprises alongside the operational metrics normally used to grade them.
Coverage of the awards was published on July 29, 2026 by Primeiro Impacto and, under the byline of Paulo Leite Barros of Grupo V4 Comunicacao, by Lil Pasta News. Diario Independente reported the same two distinctions and the same IGAPE organising role.
