Within one week, utility-scale battery projects separated by more than two orders of magnitude in size each reported progress, from a facility holding 10 MWh of storage to a system rated at 400 MW and 1,600 MWh.

One market already counted 33.1 GWh of utility-scale storage. Set against that installed base, the largest single system reporting a milestone this week, at 1,600 MWh, would equal less than a twentieth of that total.

Projects from 10 MWh to 1,600 MWh moved at once

Atmos Renewables appointed Enerven to deliver the 400 MW/1,600 MWh Teebar battery energy storage system, with site mobilization expected this month. At rated power, that configuration discharges for four hours.

R.Power's 254 MWh system in Romania entered the final phase of construction. The 127 MW project is expected to begin operating in the coming months and sits near the border with Bulgaria. Its power and energy ratings imply a two-hour discharge at full output.

Energy Dome said it shipped its first entirely in-house manufactured dome to India for the 20 MW/160 MWh project with NTPC. That system stores eight hours of output at rated power, four times the duration of the Romanian asset.

A tender adds more capacity to the pipeline. Eskom will contribute at least 2 GW of solar PV and 1 GW/4 GWh of batteries, which may be complemented by projects owned or originated by selected strategic partners. The battery portion matches the four-hour duration of the Teebar system.

At the small end, the Helderhoop facility carries an initial 7 MW of solar generation and 10 MWh of battery storage.

What the spread of durations signals

The configurations reporting progress span from two hours to eight hours of discharge at rated power. If duration tracks intended function, the eight-hour system would be built to shift energy across longer stretches than the two-hour unit.

Each milestone ties a developer to a delivery partner: Atmos Renewables to Enerven, and Energy Dome to NTPC. R.Power carries the construction risk on the 254 MWh Romanian system until it enters operation in the coming months. Eskom's contribution of 1 GW/4 GWh depends on a tender that may draw additional projects from partners.
