Finnish Industrial Power Buyers Back Iberdrola's Entry as a Check on Prices
The arrival of Spanish utility Iberdrola in Finland can hold back upward pressure on electricity prices, according to Pasi Kuokkanen, chief executive of Suomen Sahkonkayttajat (Elfi), the organisation representing large electricity consumers in Finland.
Kuokkanen said large electricity users will probably benefit as Iberdrola establishes itself in the country. He welcomed the Spanish energy company, described as one of the largest in the world, to Finland.
The comments were reported by Kauppalehti in an article by Alberto Claramunt published on July 23, 2026, at 19:15, covering the Caruna transaction. Talouselama, under the same byline, carried the remarks on July 28, 2026, at 07:00, also framed around the Caruna deal.
For industrial offtakers, the mechanism Kuokkanen points to is competitive rather than regulatory: a new owner of Finnish assets with the balance sheet of a global-scale utility changes who sets the terms in a market where heavy users have limited counterparties. Elfi's constituency is the segment most exposed to that arithmetic, since electricity is a direct input cost rather than a household bill line.

Equity markets on the day of the Kauppalehti report showed the OMX Helsinki PI index at 13,809.07 points, up 0.88%, quoted at 18:30. The DAX stood at 26,006.53 points, down 0.15% at 18:35, and the STOXX Europe 600 was unchanged at 649.90 points at 19:00.
Across the Atlantic, the Nasdaq 100 was quoted at 29,544.16 points, up 0.21% at 00:15, while the S&P 500 stood at 7,718.60 points, down 0.38% at 00:30.
Cross-border utility acquisitions are read by industrial buyers through a narrow lens: whether the incoming owner brings capital and pricing behaviour that widen the field of sellers. Kuokkanen's framing places that question on Finnish grid and supply assets, with the expectation of benefit stated as probable rather than certain. The qualification matters, because the price effect he describes is containment of pressure, not a reduction in levels.
Kauppalehti and Talouselama both give their editorial address as PL 189, 00101 Helsinki, Alvar Aallon katu 3 C, with a switchboard on 010 665 101.
