Iberdrola's Neoenergia Wins Seven Abradee Awards as It Commits BRL 50 Billion to Brazilian Grids
Iberdrola's Brazilian subsidiary Neoenergia won seven of the eleven awards it was shortlisted for at the Brazilian Association of Electric Energy Distributors (Abradee) awards, the same haul it took in the previous edition.
Neoenergia Cosern was named best distributor in Brazil for the second consecutive year, with Neoenergia Elektro placing second. Cosern also took first place in the Economic and Financial Management category.
Group companies were the only finalists in the Quality of Management and Innovation Management categories, both won by Neoenergia Elektro. On the regional awards, Cosern was recognised as best distributor in the Nordeste, Elektro took the Sudeste award, and Neoenergia Brasilia was named best distributor for the Norte-Centro Oeste region.
The result repeats the previous edition, when Neoenergia collected seven awards and one honourable mention. In 2025, Cosern was recognised as best distributor in Brazil and best in the Nordeste, and received an honourable mention in Health and Safety.
Behind the recognition sits the capital commitment that makes Brazilian distribution central to the Spanish utility's network business. The group has announced investments of BRL 50 billion between 2026 and 2030, close to EUR 9 billion, to expand, modernise and digitalise electricity networks through Neoenergia. Brazil is a strategic market for the utility chaired by Ignacio Sanchez Galan.
The spending run rate is already visible. In 2025 alone, Neoenergia allocated BRL 10.1 billion, around EUR 1.7 billion, to new investments, mainly in the distribution business. According to the Brazilian Association of Infrastructure and Base Industries (Abdib), Neoenergia is the private company that has invested the most in infrastructure in Brazil over the last four years.
The asset base the awards measure is broad. Neoenergia operates in 18 states and the Federal District, and its five distributors serve close to 17 million customers, equivalent to a population of almost 40 million people. The company has 4,200 MW of installed capacity and operates more than 8,000 kilometres of transmission lines.
Those five distributors are Neoenergia Coelba in Bahia, Neoenergia Pernambuco, Neoenergia Elektro in Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, Neoenergia Cosern in Rio Grande do Norte, and Neoenergia Brasilia in the Federal District. The regulated distribution franchises span three of the country's award regions, which is why a single group could sweep the Nordeste, Sudeste and Norte-Centro Oeste categories in one edition.
For an international audience tracking where large utilities are placing regulated capital, the numbers frame the case: a EUR 9 billion five-year network programme sits behind a distribution platform whose top-ranked unit on service quality is also the unit ranked first on economic and financial management. The Abdib ranking places that programme ahead of every other private infrastructure investor in the country over a four-year window.
