Pakistan brought in 4.6 GWh of lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity during 2025, a jump of 220% from the prior year, Islamabad-based think tank Renewables First said in a report covered by ESS News and pv magazine.

That single year carried more than half of everything the country has imported since 2018, which totaled 7.6 GWh by the close of last year.

Before the recent climb, annual volumes ranged from 0.1 GWh to 0.5 GWh across 2018 to 2023, then moved up to 1.4 GWh in 2024 ahead of the 4.6 GWh recorded in 2025.

Homes accounted for the largest share of the flow. By the end of 2025, residential BESS imports stood at 3.1 GWh, of which 2.44 GWh landed during the year itself, according to the report.

Renewables First put the residential base at roughly 282,000 solarized households, or 4%, now running BESS at home.

Small- and medium-sized enterprises and solar integration across commercial sites lifted commercial BESS imports to 1.0 GWh by the end of 2025, the report said, while industrial installations pushed that segment to 2.0 GWh over the same span.
