Petrobras Closes Purchase of 75% Operated Stake in Sao Tome and Principe Block 3
Petrobras completed the acquisition of a 75% operated interest in Block 3, a deepwater exploration area offshore Sao Tome and Principe, on July 9, 2026, according to Industria News. The transaction value was not disclosed.
The closing leaves Petrobras as operator alongside Oranto with 15% and the Agencia Nacional do Petroleo de Sao Tome e Principe, the island nation's national petroleum agency, with the remaining 10%. The transaction follows a process the company first disclosed on April 17, 2026, Misto Brasil reported.
Block 3 remains at an early exploration stage. Sao Tome and Principe's oil potential is estimated at 2 billion recoverable barrels, according to Investidor10. That estimate is the scale figure attached to the acreage rather than a discovered volume, and Petrobras now carries operatorship of the drilling programme that would test it.
In a market filing, the state-controlled company said the deal fits its strategy of rebuilding oil and gas reserves through exploration in new frontiers, both in Brazil and abroad. Petrobras added that evaluating new opportunities is intended to diversify its exploration portfolio and generate value.
The island country, a former Portuguese colony with 210,000 inhabitants, sits off the west coast of Africa. Petrobras already holds other minority positions in oil blocks along the African coast, dating from the resumption of its international activities in 2024. Block 3 shifts the company from passive partner to the party controlling the work programme, the drilling schedule and the operating spend.
For a frontier acreage entry at this stage, the undisclosed consideration is consistent with an unappraised block: the material commitment is exploration capital rather than acquisition price. Petrobras assumes responsibility for exploring the commodity under the transaction, according to Investidor10. The 10% held by the national petroleum agency gives the host state a direct carried position in any success case.
PETR4 traded at BRL 47.11, up 0.30%, on the quote strip of the Investidor10 report published on July 12, 2026 by Lucas Simoes. Data cited from Investidor10 show BRL 1,000 invested in Petrobras ten years ago would be worth BRL 13,837.30 today with dividends reinvested, against BRL 3,201.30 for the same amount tracking the Ibovespa.
The Industria News report on the closing was published on July 9, 2026 by Marcelo Sampaio. Misto Brasil published its account on July 13, 2026.
