Petrobras Reports Hydrocarbon Indications at Morpho Well Off Amapa in 2,886 Metres of Water
Petrobras said on Friday, August 14, 2026 that it had identified hydrocarbons in an exploratory well being drilled in block FZA-M-59, in deep water off Amapa in the Foz do Amazonas sedimentary basin, on Brazil's equatorial margin. The company described the result as indications of oil and natural gas.
The well, named Morpho (1-BRSA-1405-APS), sits about 175 km off the Amapa coast in a water depth of 2,886 metres. A caption accompanying the report placed the well 175 km from the coast at Oiapoque and nearly 500 km from the mouth of the Amazon river.
Petrobras is the operator of the block and holds a 100% interest in the area. The acreage was acquired in the ANP's 11th licensing round, in 2013, under the concession regime.
The hydrocarbon-bearing interval was established through electrical logs and indications in rock, according to the company. Drilling operations remain under way for the continuation of the exploratory evaluation, safely and with respect for the environment and for people, Petrobras said.
The finding shows hydrocarbons are present in the region but does not yet mean a commercial oil reserve exists, according to the report. That distinction matters for a frontier well: logs and rock indications establish a working petroleum system, not a booked volume, and no flow test result or resource estimate accompanied the announcement.
"Our optimism regarding the Brazilian equatorial margin is confirmed today," said Magda Chambriard, chief executive of Petrobras, adding that this first discovery off the Amapa coast is the result of the company's dedication and competence and that it is committed to replacing oil reserves and to the country's energy security.
For international explorers tracking Atlantic conjugate margin plays, the operational parameters are the substance here. A wildcat in 2,886 metres of water places Morpho in the ultra-deepwater category, where rig day rates, well control requirements, and long-lead subsea equipment set the cost of any follow-up campaign. Sole ownership means Petrobras carries the full exploration cost and the full upside without a partner cost-share.
The well's position, 175 km from the shoreline and close to 500 km from the Amazon's mouth, is the distance metric most relevant to logistics planning and to the permitting debate that has shadowed the basin. Petrobras framed the continuing drilling in terms of safety and environmental care, language it repeated in the same statement.
The block's 2013 vintage is a reminder of how long frontier acreage can sit before the drill bit arrives: thirteen years separate the ANP round from the announced indications, a lag driven by the sequencing of licensing, seismic work, and drilling approvals in any new basin.
The report on the announcement was written by Heitor Pires and published at 20:11 on August 14, 2026 by Gazeta de Sao Paulo. The next observable signals are the outcome of the ongoing exploratory evaluation at Morpho and any subsequent disclosure by Petrobras on whether the interval supports a commercial reserve.
