Poland Tops Europe Battery Revenue Rankings in May on High aFRR Prices
A two-hour battery in Poland cleared more than EUR 800,000/MW on an annualized basis in May 2026, keeping the country at the front of Clean Horizon's European battery storage revenue rankings, according to ESS News.
Clean Horizon tied that lead mainly to automatic frequency restoration reserve (aFRR) capacity prices, which ran above EUR 120/MW/h through the month. Those balancing payments separated Poland from the rest of the tracked field.
Second place went to Italy, where a four-hour battery in the north brought in estimated annual revenues of EUR 654,000/MW against EUR 640,000/MW for an equivalent unit in the south. In both zones, the tertiary reserve (mFRR) market supplied roughly 80% of what batteries earned.
The steepest monthly move came from Portugal. pv magazine reported estimated revenues there climbing 43%, driven by firmer capacity prices and wider spreads across the aFRR, mFRR, and day-ahead markets. France ran counter to that trend, its estimated revenues sliding 17% month on month as aFRR and mFRR prices softened.
Within the Baltics, the spread was wide. Latvia and Lithuania each roughly doubled their estimated annual revenues from April on stronger aFRR capacity prices, landing at EUR 338,000/MW and EUR 326,000/MW. Estonia held near EUR 175,000/MW annually, the weakest showing of the three Baltic markets.
