CCTE Reports Above-60 GWd/MTU Burnup for ANEEL Fuel at Idaho Test Reactor
Clean Core Thorium Energy said its ANEEL fuel reached burnup above 60 GWd/MTU inside the Advanced Test Reactor at Idaho National Laboratory. The company separately reported that a peer-reviewed engineering assessment of the fuel ran in Nuclear Engineering and Design, a journal published by Elsevier.
In a CANDU-6 reactor, published analyses put the average discharge burnup for ANEEL fuel at 44,300 MWd/MTHM, roughly six times the figure for natural uranium fuel, according to the GlobeNewswire release.
The assessment ties several safety metrics to the thorium-based design. Full-core coolant void reactivity drops by nearly 20% with ANEEL fuel, the paper states. Its fuel temperature coefficient runs more than six times more negative than that of natural uranium fuel, the same analyses show.
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories ran independent calculations with the MCNP code and found that existing reactor control and shutdown systems keep adequate margins with ANEEL fuel, with no redesign required.
Mehul Shah, Founder and CEO of Clean Core Thorium Energy, said the company "demonstrated first and published second".
