US DOE Selects First 278 Genesis Mission Awards, Led by $60 Million Nuclear AI Project
The U.S. Department of Energy has selected the first projects under the Genesis Mission Request for Applications, part of President Trump's Genesis Mission, according to the DOE. The selections total 278 awards, with the largest a three-year, $60 million investment in nuclear energy.
That nuclear project will use AI to help deliver nuclear facilities faster and safer while cutting operating costs, according to the DOE.
Of the 278 awards, 87 are led by DOE and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) National Laboratories, 168 by universities, 19 by companies, and 4 by nonprofit organizations, the DOE said.
The selected work spans nuclear energy, critical mineral extraction, intelligent chip design, and commercial fusion energy, according to the DOE.
Across the awards, 342 institutions are participating: 16 DOE and NNSA National Laboratories, 142 universities, 157 companies, 13 nonprofit organizations, and 14 other institutions, the DOE said.
The DOE said the Genesis Mission RFA generated the largest response to a funding opportunity in its history.
"The 278 projects selected today represent the very best of our nation's scientific enterprise," said Secretary of Energy Chris Wright.
