Ooredoo Commits USD 800 Million to Zankore AI Compute Platform in Indonesia
Qatari telecom Ooredoo has taken the lead investor role in Zankore, a new AI compute platform in Indonesia, with a commitment of USD 800 million to support the launch, according to Semafor.
Zankore intends to bring 200 MW of capacity online next year, Semafor reported, naming Nvidia and Nokia as suppliers to the project.
The telecom's investment case rests on demand growth across the region. Ooredoo sees data center demand more than tripling in Southeast Asia by 2030, according to Semafor. The company has had a foothold in Indonesia for nearly two decades.
A second transaction under consideration points to compute assets further north. Abu Dhabi's Mubadala is weighing becoming the lead investor in a possible USD 6.3 billion, 500 MW data center in Japan's Akita prefecture, Bloomberg reported, according to Semafor. That project would be more than twice the size of Zankore's first phase in megawatt terms.
The USD 800 million commitment covers the launch of the platform rather than a single site.
