El Dabaa Unit 1 Containment Reaches 34 Metres After 1,608 Cubic Metre Pour
Concreting of the fourth tier of the inner containment at unit 1 of Egypt's El Dabaa nuclear power plant is finished, the Nuclear Power Plants Authority said, according to World Nuclear News.
The pour used 1,608 cubic metres of concrete and lifted the reactor building from 24.4 metres above ground to 34.0 metres.
Alexey Zhukov of ASE JSC said installation of the fifth tier, which will act as the support for the polar crane, is planned to begin by mid-August.
El Dabaa sits about 320 kilometres north-west of Cairo and is led by Rosatom, with four VVER-1200 units planned. It will be Egypt's first nuclear power plant and the first built in Africa since South Africa's Koeberg nearly 40 years ago.
Egypt is targeting 9% of its electricity from nuclear by 2030, a share that would be reached once the first two units enter commercial operation and displace oil and gas.
