Kalmar terminal tractor runs on Elonroad in-road charging at Ljungby port
Kalmar has put an Ottawa T2 EV electric terminal tractor to work on an in-road charging system at the port of Ljungby, Sweden, where the vehicle runs its shifts without ever plugging in.
Elonroad built the system around a powered rail set into the road surface. The rail feeds current up through a physical contact into Kalmar's electric terminal trucks, forklifts, and material handlers. A 200-meter electrified section has proven enough to keep the Ljungby yard moving, charging vehicles whether they are rolling or standing still.
The Swedish Energy Agency funds the joint effort between Elonroad and Kalmar.
"The ultimate goal is to offer Kalmar customers a worry-free charging solution," said Per-Erik Johansson, Technology Manager, Electrification at Kalmar.
Partners are now measuring charging efficiency and uptime on the electric road with the Kalmar terminal tractor. Once that testing wraps, the technology moves to a real port setting with pilot customers.
Terminal tractors shunt containers and trailers around ports and yards on near-continuous shifts, a duty cycle that leaves battery-electric units little idle time for plug-in charging. Feeding power from the road while the tractor works removes that constraint at the Ljungby yard.
