Red Eléctrica links Tenerife and La Gomera with 36 km submarine cable

Red Eléctrica has finished a submarine power link tying the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera into one electrical network.

The connection runs a 36 km, 66 kV double-circuit line combining underground and undersea sections, backed by two 66 kV substations at El Palmar on La Gomera and Chío on Tenerife.

The cable itself carries a price tag of EUR 145 million, on top of the earlier spending on the two substations. Chío came online in December 2024, followed by El Palmar in July 2025.

With the link in place, the archipelago gains a second electricity subsystem pairing La Gomera and Tenerife, after the earlier Lanzarote-Fuerteventura grouping.

Redeia Chairwoman Beatriz Corredor said the project strengthens the reliability of power supply across the two islands.

President of Islas Canarias Fernando Clavijo said the cable ends La Gomera's isolation from the grid and lets it share a single system with Tenerife, so each can back the other during breakdowns or supply shortfalls.

World Bank backs USD 265 million Moroccan pumped hydro plant to firm 1 GW of renewables

The World Bank cleared a USD 265 million financing package for the Ifahsa pumped hydro project, a scheme run by Morocco's National Office of Electricity and Potable Water (ONEE), pv magazine reported.

Once built, Ifahsa will store 1,500 MWh across 300 MW of capacity, enough to firm at least 1 GW of new wind and solar output. Two reversible pump-turbine units rated at 150 MW each will drive the plant, moving up to 44 cubic metres of water per second in turbine mode and 37 cubic metres per second when pumping.

The site lies 14 km from Chefchaouen in northern Morocco and ties into the 400 kV transmission grid. Total build cost is put at USD 500 million, with the African Development Bank sharing the financing.

According to the World Bank, the package should draw in roughly USD 1 billion of private capital as investors commit to fresh renewables projects.

The World Bank estimates Ifahsa could absorb 400 MW of solar and 600 MW of wind while cutting renewable curtailment by about 340 GWh a year against a no-plant baseline.

Beyond pumped storage, ONEE plans to add 800 MW / 1,600 MWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity under its master plan running from 2026 to 2030.

Morocco held 12 GW of installed generating capacity in 2024, and peak demand climbed 8% to 8.2 GW in 2025. That peak is set to hit 11.3 GW by 2030.

Sixteen Consumers Drop Grid Permits, Freeing 1,040 MW on Spain's Transmission Network

Sixteen consumption facilities gave up their granted access permits under Royal Decree-Law 7/2026, freeing 1,040 MW of capacity on the Spanish transmission grid, according to Red Eléctrica REE.

The deadline shaped the wave of withdrawals. Consumers with access and connection permits faced a cutoff of 22 June 2026 to hand them back and sidestep the access capacity reservation charge set by the regulation.

All of the freed capacity now sits reserved across three grid nodes, Red Eléctrica REE said: Balsicas 220 kV, Tabernas 220 kV and Totana 400 kV.

The decree sets a floor for what gets held back. Any capacity freed through relinquishments above 5 MW is set aside for new demand applications to be filed and reviewed.

Timing for that next round depends on a publication step. Once the State Secretariat for Energy issues the list of nodes and available capacities, Red Eléctrica gets a four-month window to take in and assess fresh demand applications.

High-priority projects go to the front of the queue when that window closes. Red Eléctrica must rank applications tied to consumption facilities marked high priority under Article 13 of the decree.

US Heat Wave Strains Grid as Data Centers Ordered onto Backup Power

A heat wave gripping the United States this week is adding pressure to an already-strained energy grid, according to Semafor Net Zero. The country's largest grid operator forecast that electricity demand could break records, raising the risk of blackouts.

The US energy department this week ordered data centers to use backup generators to ease strain on the system, Semafor reported.

The head of an energy-focused nonprofit called the situation a "five-alarm fire," citing depleted reservoirs, wildfires, and a spike in energy demand stemming from the artificial intelligence boom.

Europe's grid felt the pain of heat waves last week, according to Semafor, and high temperatures forced several power plants to reduce output.

Green Flexibility Publishes Model Grid-Connection Contract for German Battery Storage

Green Flexibility has released a template contract that aims to standardize the terms utilities and developers agree on when connecting battery energy storage projects to the grid in Germany, according to ESS News. The framework targets the disputes over forecasting and curtailment terms that slow individual connection deals.

The document rests on real operating data. It builds on the developer's 15 MW/33 MWh battery in Immenstadt, Bavaria, and on 15 separate negotiations with grid operators, ESS News reported.

Green Flexibility says the template sets out dynamic power limits, a curtailment model based on full-load hours, and coordinated control of ancillary services.

Allgäu Netz intends to apply the framework next year when connecting further large-scale battery projects across its network area, according to ESS News.

Volker Wiegand, managing director of Allgäu Netz, told Green Flexibility that connection agreements written too broadly or too tightly can stop storage systems from delivering flexibility to the grid. Wiegand said forecasting and operational limits should stay with grid operators, since they hold the network data and carry responsibility for system security.

PJM Peak Load Nears All-Time Record During July Heat, Held Down by Demand Response

PJM's peak instantaneous load reached approximately 162,700 MW between 5 and 6 p.m. on July 2, according to preliminary figures published by PJM Inside Lines, a level the grid operator said was held down by demand response programs.

The all-time PJM record peak load stands at 165,600 MW, set in 2006, according to PJM. PJM said the July 2 peak was likely to have surpassed that record.

An official preliminary peak figure will not be available until after a 60-day period required to calculate the performance of the roughly 6,000 MW of demand response resources activated during the event, according to PJM.

During the July 2 evening peak, PJM executed a series of procedures to manage demand and maximize supply after some generation tripped offline, including calling on emergency demand response, according to PJM Inside Lines.

PJM said it requested and received approval of an emergency 202c order from the U.S. Department of Energy authorizing transmission owners, as a last resort prior to voltage reduction or load shed, to curtail data centers and other large loads with backup generation.

PJM also received approval of a DOE 202c emergency order granting temporary relief from environmental permit restrictions for generating units, effective July 1 through July 3, according to PJM. That order was later extended through July 6.

Ahead of the forecasted hot weather, PJM issued a Maintenance Outage Recall on June 25, requesting that maintenance outages be returned to service to increase the amount of generation available to meet customer demand, according to PJM Inside Lines.

PJM serves 67 million people.
