Canary Media: New York Faced Ambitious Climate Law and Indian Point Closure as Hochul Took Office

New York Governor Kathy Hochul took office in 2021, at a point when the state was in the middle of a complicated energy transition, according to Canary Media.

Albany had passed one of the nation's most ambitious decarbonization laws two years before she took office, Canary Media reported.

The state had also shuttered the Indian Point nuclear plant, which Canary Media described as New York's single largest source of carbon-free power.

Studsvik Picks GE Vernova Hitachi and Samsung C&T for 1,200-MWe Swedish SMR Plan

Studsvik AB has named GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Samsung C&T as strategic collaborators on a proposed four-unit BWRX-300 build in Sweden with a combined capacity of about 1,200 MWe, according to Power Magazine.

The Swedish nuclear technology company has not fixed the location. Power Magazine reported that the plant is planned for either Studsvik's licensed nuclear site in Nyköping or Målma in Valdemarsvik.

The design at the centre of the plan is the BWRX-300, a small modular reactor from GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy. Four units would deliver roughly 1,200 MWe in total under the configuration described by Power Magazine.

Samsung C&T joins as the second strategic collaborator on the proposal.

Two RITM-200 Reactors Installed on Icebreaker Leningrad at Baltic Shipyard

Two RITM-200 nuclear reactors have been installed on the icebreaker Leningrad, under construction at the Baltic Shipyard, World Nuclear News reported.

Each unit weighs more than 147 tonnes, stands 7.3 metres tall and measures 3.3 metres in diameter, according to World Nuclear News.

The reactor pair delivers a thermal capacity of 175 MW, which converts to 30 MW at the propellers. Design service life runs to 40 years, with seven years between refuelling.

The keel-laying ceremony for the Leningrad took place in January 2024.

Fifteen RITM-200 units have been completed to date, and 13 more are under construction, World Nuclear News reported.
