Pennsylvania Hydrogen Hubs Stall Amid Budget Uncertainty

Two hydrogen hubs tied to Pennsylvania have stalled, with one going dark and the other proceeding cautiously, according to Inside Climate News.

The Biden administration announced USD 7 billion in federal funding for seven hydrogen hubs nationwide, with Pennsylvania expected to be a major participant, Inside Climate News reported.

ARCH2 has gone dark, with former partners denying involvement or not responding to media requests, while MACH2 has entered a holding pattern, according to Inside Climate News.

MACH2 CEO Manny Cintron told Inside Climate News via email that the hub's award remains active, but its partners continue to proceed cautiously because of the current budget uncertainty.

ANSI Report Flags Implementation Gaps, Not Missing Standards, as Hydrogen Barrier

Barriers to hydrogen deployment often stem from difficulties in applying existing requirements rather than from an absence of standards, according to stakeholders cited in a new report from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). They said the obstacle lies in implementing, adopting, and applying requirements that already exist.

Continued deployment success depends on helping the people who design, permit, inspect, and operate hydrogen systems find and apply those standards, according to the ANSI report.

Workshop participants gave strong support to a hydrogen standards roadmap covering storage and infrastructure. The report describes the roadmap as a way to organize priorities, identify standards and research gaps, and coordinate work across the hydrogen sector, areas it calls critical to supporting all end-use applications.

Legal Challenge and Council Objection Target Two Wind Projects

The Guardians of Nooramunga Coastal Communities have started proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria to halt a wind energy facility at the Ramsar-listed Nooramunga Marine & Coastal Park, according to wind-watch.org.

The case targets the Victorian Government's fast-track planning process for Synergy Wind's proposed 13-turbine Gelliondale Wind Farm, wind-watch.org reported.

In a separate dispute, Scottish Ministers are holding hearings on the proposed Newland Hill wind farm and battery energy storage site near Gifford after East Lothian Council objected to the plans, according to The Edinburgh Reporter.

East Lothian Council's planning committee voted in September 2024 to lodge a formal objection to Belltown Power's plans for 15 turbines, The Edinburgh Reporter reported.

Italgas Completes 19th Biomethane Connection at Borgo San Dalmazzo

Italgas SpA said Tuesday it had completed its 19th biomethane connection, feeding waste-derived biomethane into the gas distribution network at Borgo San Dalmazzo.

At the site, waste is converted into biomethane and injected into the city's natural gas distribution network, according to Italgas.

Once fully operational, the facility will be able to feed up to four million cubic meters of waste-derived biomethane per year into the local network, the company said. That planned annual supply is equivalent to the average annual consumption of around 5,000 households, according to Italgas.

IEA Targets Africa Clean Cooking Gap at Nairobi Summit

The IEA will use its Nairobi summit to narrow Africa's clean cooking funding gap, with the World Bank expected to unveil a new bond scheme, executive director Fatih Birol told Argus in an exclusive interview.

The IEA estimates Africa needs around USD 2 billion per year in upfront investment to close its clean cooking access gap by 2040, according to Argus.

The push comes as Africa holds less than 1% of the clean energy technology market and captures less than 0.1% of the value generated by manufacturing these technologies, according to ESI-Africa.

ESI-Africa describes a path for the continent built on three shifts: value-added mineral processing in mining, renewable-powered low-emission commodities, and local manufacturing of clean technologies.

Warning-Color Turbine Blades Made Birds Hesitate in Trials, Mongabay Reports

Scientists tested whether warning color patterns drawn from nature could help birds avoid fatal collisions with wind turbines, according to Mongabay.

In video-game-style experiments, great tits were shown different turbine blade designs, including a pattern based on the bold warning colors some animals use to deter predators, Mongabay reported.

The birds hesitated longer and approached less often when warning patterns were present, an effect that was strongest with the bio-inspired design, according to Mongabay.

The researchers hope that copying nature's own safety signs could make wind energy safer for birds, Mongabay said.

Australian Wind Projects Reach Financial Close as PNE AG Cuts 2026 Guidance

Atmos Renewables reached financial close on the 470 MW Parron Maam Marang wind farm in Western Australia's Wheatbelt, a project backed by the Capacity Investment Scheme, according to Energy Magazine.

The Australian wind sector recorded two construction commencements in one week, including Neoen's 346 MW Goyder North wind farm in South Australia.

"After two of the hardest years on record for wind project financing, Australia just had five very good weeks," said Ryan Hauville, director at Human Impact Group.

In a separate development, PNE AG revised its expected 2026 EBITDA to a range of EUR 60 million to EUR 75 million. The company cited project delays as the primary reason for the adjustment.

The delayed projects are now anticipated to be completed in 2027, which PNE AG attributed to extended transaction processes and postponed permitting procedures. PNE AG also opted to retain certain wind farms in its generation portfolio that had initially been intended for sale.
