UK Commits GBP 17 Million for Chornobyl Shelter Repairs

Britain will provide GBP 17 million to repair the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, according to Archyde. Chancellor John Healey and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the money will restore the plant's protective shelter and ventilation systems.

Those structures were hit during a Russian drone attack last year, Archyde reported. Officials warned that continued corrosion could create environmental and safety hazards over time.

The UK money sits within a wider international assistance package that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is coordinating with the Ukrainian government and G7 donors.
