Urenco USA Produces First Commercial LEU+ Cylinder in the Western World

Urenco USA has completed production of its first product cylinder of low-enriched uranium plus (LEU+), according to Neutron Bytes. The output marks the first commercial production of LEU+ in the Western world.

LEU+ contains between 5% and 10% U-235, a higher enrichment level than the fuel used in conventional light water reactors. The material opens fuel options for existing light water reactors and new advanced reactor designs that require higher levels of enriched uranium, Neutron Bytes reported.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) authorized Urenco USA in September 2025 to enrich uranium to as much as 10% U-235, making the company the first commercial uranium enricher cleared to produce LEU+, according to Neutron Bytes.
