NRIC Selects 13 Projects Across 12 Companies for Nuclear Energy Launch Pad

The Department of Energy's National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) has picked 13 new projects across 12 companies for its Nuclear Energy Launch Pad initiative, according to Power Magazine.

Power Magazine reported that the 13 selections mark a significant expansion of the DOE-authorization pathway, which routes advanced reactor and fuel-cycle developers toward demonstration on federal and non-federal sites.

The selected work spans microreactor developers, enrichment startups and fuel fabrication, per Power Magazine. That mix places reactor design alongside the upstream supply steps of enrichment and fuel manufacturing within the same authorization route.

The 12 companies behind the 13 projects were named by NRIC under the Launch Pad initiative, Power Magazine said.

NANO Nuclear Signs Non-Binding Framework With Tillman for AI Zone Reactors

NANO Nuclear Energy has signed a non-binding strategic commercial framework with Tillman Global Holdings and its Tillman Digital Gateway platform covering deployment of KRONOS MMR energy systems across Tillman's planned AI industrial zones in the United States, according to Power Engineering Nuclear.

The two sides are targeting 2 GW or more of advanced nuclear capacity by the mid-2030s, rising to 6 GW or more by 2040, Power Engineering Nuclear reported.

Under the framework, NANO Nuclear Energy is identified as Tillman's anticipated preferred nuclear technology provider. The arrangement is not binding on either party.

The reactor at the center of the arrangement is the KRONOS MMR energy system, a 15 MWe high-temperature gas-cooled unit that NANO Nuclear Energy is developing with modular and phased deployment in mind, according to Power Engineering Nuclear. At that unit size, the stated capacity targets imply a build-out sequenced across many separate modules rather than a single large station.

Tillman Digital Gateway is described as the global data-center platform of Tillman Global Holdings, and the framework ties reactor siting to the AI industrial zones that platform has planned.
