France's June 2026 Heatwave Caused More Than 2,700 Heat-Related Deaths, Analysis Finds

France's June 2026 heatwave caused more than 2,700 heat-related deaths, according to a new analysis published by Carbon Brief.

Daily high temperatures averaged across France reached 36.9C in June 2026, breaking the previous June record set in 2022 by 2.4C, the analysis found. The observed June maximum temperatures were more in line with what climate models had projected for the 2070s, according to Carbon Brief.

Day-to-day heat-related mortality rose from under 100 to almost 300 on the hottest days of 24 and 25 June, the authors found.

Public Health France attributed around 2,000 deaths in France to the extreme heat during the week of 22-28 June.

World Weather Attribution analysis found that human-caused climate change increased the frequency and intensity of the June heatwave across Europe.

Super Bowl private jet flights jumped from 110 to 247 a day, study finds

Daily private jet flights around the Super Bowl climbed from a baseline of 110 to 247 at the peak, more than doubling, according to RenewEconomy citing a study of three sporting events.

The research covered Super Bowl LVII at Glendale, Arizona, the Masters Tournament at Augusta, Georgia, and the Monaco Grand Prix on the French Riviera, all held in 2023, RenewEconomy reported.

For each venue, the study counted private jet movements at airports inside a 100 km radius and measured them against the airports' usual traffic across the rest of the year, according to RenewEconomy.

Across 2023, private jet flights put 19.5 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent into the atmosphere, the study found. A single jet matches the yearly emissions of 177 passenger cars, according to RenewEconomy.
