Strait of Hormuz Closure Turned Expected Oil Glut Into Shortage

A closure of the Strait of Hormuz in March 2026, after U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, left little ability to quickly restore the oil and gas flows the world's economy depends on, according to The Conversation Energy.

The disruption reversed the surplus the industry had prepared for. In 2023, the International Energy Agency predicted that global oil production would exceed demand by 2028, The Conversation Energy reported.

Projections of slowing oil demand pushed prices too low to attract investment in new wells and refineries, according to the same account. That left the market short of the capacity needed to respond when supply tightened.

As the fighting has continued, oil prices have climbed, causing fuel shortages and raising prices for gasoline, diesel, fertilizer, food and consumer goods, The Conversation Energy reported.

Alaska Arctic Infrastructure Faces Permafrost Thaw Risk by 2090s, The Conversation Reports

Under a high greenhouse gas emissions scenario, about 80% of buildings, 60% of roads and 90% of pipelines on Alaska's Arctic Coastal Plain are projected to be at risk of damage from sinking land by the 2090s, according to The Conversation Energy.

When ice within frozen ground melts, roads can sink, buildings can tilt, pipelines can crack and leak, and shorelines can retreat, according to The Conversation Energy.

One detection method uses very low frequency electromagnetic surveying, known as VLF-EM, which measures how the ground responds to electromagnetic signals from distant transmitters, The Conversation Energy reported. Because the technique needs no direct ground contact, a lightweight sensor can be carried by a drone over wetlands and tundra susceptible to thawing.

Study Links Oil Company Donations to Corporate Influence Over U.S. Universities

Corporate interests, including oil companies, have sought to influence universities for at least half a century by using large donations to shape research agendas, according to a study published in the journal Energy Research & Social Science and reported by Grist.

The study describes a pattern the authors call corporate capture, in which donors gain sway over who gets hired, what researchers study, and what is taught in classes.

One analysis cited by Grist found that Exxon Mobil, BP, Chevron, Shell Oil, ConocoPhillips, and Koch Industries donated at least USD 700 million to 27 U.S. universities from 2010 to 2020.

The study's authors say that corporate influence weakened schools' defenses against outside pressure, paving the way for the Trump administration's attack.

Solar Passes Nuclear in Annual Generation for First Time in 2025, WNISR Says

Solar generation overtook nuclear power worldwide for the first time in 2025, according to the World Nuclear Industry Status Report (WNISR) 2026.

Solar output rose 30% over the year, pushing past nuclear's annual electricity production. The world's operating nuclear fleet grew just 1.1%, and output fell outside China, the report said.

The shift showed up in monthly data before the annual figures confirmed it. WNISR 2026, overseen by nuclear energy consultant Mycle Schneider, found wind alone topped nuclear generation in March 2025, with solar clearing nuclear in April, driven in part by batteries.

FICCI-Nangia Set 14-Point Grid Roadmap for India Through 2030

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Nangia published a 14-point roadmap for India's power grid through 2030, according to responsibleus.com. The report ties grid stability to renewable integration, wider energy storage, and new transmission.

Among its measures, the paper backs grid-enhancing technologies paired with dynamic congestion management to raise system strength, according to The Economic Times.

The timeline runs in two stages. Within 12 months, the report wants notified standards covering system inertia and grid strength, finished cybersecurity compliance work, and a start on mapping corridors for grid-enhancing technologies, according to responsibleus.com.

By 2030, the roadmap seeks amendments to the Electricity Act that give grid stability services statutory footing, writes grid stability into national planning criteria, and speeds up spending on storage and transmission, according to responsibleus.com.

New Brunswick Premier Says Lorneville Data Centre Won't Raise Resident Power Rates

New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt said the province's draft data centre policy requires new projects to have no impact or a positive impact on ratepayers. The commitment addresses concerns over the proposed Lorneville Data Centre near Saint John.

The project would need 390 MW to operate, according to the arrangement between Beacon Data Centers and VoltaGrid. Of that total, 190 MW is expected to be produced on site, with the remaining 200 MW supplied by NB Power's grid.

New Brunswick Southwest MP John Williamson said the Lorneville Data Centre should not move ahead unless stable electricity rates can be assured for New Brunswick residents. Williamson said ratepayers across the province have seen a 35% power rate increase over the last three years.
