DOE Agrees to Loan of up to USD 1.9 Billion for NextEra's Duane Arnold Restart

NextEra Energy and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have agreed to a loan of up to USD 1.9 billion to fund the restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa, according to Power Engineering Nuclear.

The plant, rated at 615 MW, sits in Palo, Iowa, Power Engineering Nuclear reported. It ran for more than four decades before shutting in 2020.

Regulatory clearance came earlier from the state. In June the Iowa Utilities Commission issued a certificate authorizing NextEra Energy to construct and operate the facility, according to Power Engineering Nuclear.

Power Engineering Nuclear reported that the restart is expected to create thousands of construction and refurbishment jobs, plus at least 400 permanent positions once the plant returns to operation.
