Global Cleantech Investment Fell in H1 2026, ESS News Reports

Global cleantech investment dropped by $151.1 billion, or 28%, in Q1 2026 against the elevated levels recorded at the end of 2025, according to ESS News.

The second quarter recovered part of that ground. Investment rose 5% to $395.4 billion, still 25% below the Q4 2025 figure, ESS News reported.

China's share of global cleantech manufacturing and industry investment dipped below one-third for the first time, per the same report.

Utility-scale storage ran against the flow of the headline rebound. Investment in the segment fell 14% from H2 2025 and 16% from H1 2025, ESS News said.

Battery factory commitments proved steadier. Global battery manufacturing announcements held at roughly $23 billion in both Q1 and Q2 2026, matching Q4 2025 levels, according to ESS News.

That stability was not evenly distributed. US battery announcements hit a record low in H1 2026 at $915 million, the weakest since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, ESS News reported.
