UN Backs Global Grids Accelerator to Speed Power Network Upgrades in Africa and Southeast Asia

The world body has thrown its weight behind a push to accelerate investment in electricity infrastructure across Africa and Southeast Asia, targeting one of the biggest bottlenecks slowing the shift to clean energy, according to Climate Home News.

The Global Grids Accelerator is designed to convert government plans for expanding and modernising power networks into investment-ready projects, and to marshal the expertise, financing and support required to build them, Climate Home News reported.

The initiative will not set up a new financing institution, and no additional funding for grid upgrades was announced alongside the launch, per Climate Home News. Instead, it will function as a broker, drawing together international agencies, development banks, investors and utilities around grid priorities identified by governments.
