ECB's Lane Warns Second Energy Price Wave Will Make Eurozone Inflation Stickier

A renewed rise in oil and gas prices will push eurozone inflation higher and keep it elevated for longer before it eases back toward target from mid-2027, according to Chief Economist Philip Lane.

Lane said the current bout of energy price increases should feed through to food, electricity and goods prices, while pressure on services should stay contained. He described the episode as a second wave of energy price rises, distinct from the shock that drove the previous inflation surge.

ING flagged a related market dynamic, arguing that jumps in oil prices leave a lasting imprint on inflation expectations that constrains how far rates can fall when crude retreats. That asymmetry, according to ING, could cap the downside for euro rates in the near term.

Eurozone Consumer Confidence Slips to Minus 16.5 as Energy Prices Rebound

Eurozone consumer sentiment weakened in September as households absorbed rebounding energy prices tied to escalating military action in the Middle East, according to reporting by the Wall Street Journal and Morningstar.

The European Commission's flash consumer-confidence indicator for the currency area fell 1.0 point to minus 16.5 for the month. The reading extended a decline that the Wall Street Journal linked directly to higher energy costs following the Middle East escalation.

Capital Economics economist Jack Allen-Reynolds, in a note to clients cited by Morningstar, said household moods had soured after fuel prices climbed around 6% during the month, alongside higher utility bills and lower equity prices.
