Westinghouse, University of South Carolina Back AP1000 Deployment at Third State Nuclear Summit

Westinghouse Electric Company and the University of South Carolina announced support for the U.S. fleet deployment of AP1000 reactors and the creation of a nuclear workforce development program, according to WSPA. The commitment opened the third South Carolina Nuclear Summit in Columbia, South Carolina.

Leaders from across the country gathered in Columbia for the event, WSPA reported. All 600 tickets for the summit at Colonial Life Arena were sold, according to WSPA.

Participants also discussed how to build an accelerated timeline for the V.C. Summer plant in Fairfield County, South Carolina, WSPA reported.

Magwood to Join newcleo Board as Vice-Chairman in January 2027

William D. Magwood, IV is anticipated to join newcleo's Board of Directors as Vice-Chairman, effective January 1, 2027, according to a GlobeNewswire announcement from the company.

newcleo describes itself as a company working in advanced modular reactor technology and nuclear fuel manufacturing.

Magwood will step down as Director-General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency at the end of 2026, according to the release.

Before the NEA, he served as a Commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission from 2010 to 2014, a period during which he was called on to advise the Japanese government, agencies, universities and industry after the Fukushima Daiichi accident.

Earlier, Magwood ran the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy from 1998 to 2005, according to the company. During that time he established the Idaho National Laboratory, launched the "Nuclear Power 2010" program credited with restarting U.S. reactor construction, and set up the multinational Generation IV International Forum.
