Summer Heat and Drought Strained European Energy Systems as Invictus Preps Zimbabwe Well

Extreme heat and drought during summer 2026 exposed the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure across Europe and beyond, according to a report published on the OSCE economic and environmental activities site.

Low water levels on the Danube forced Hungary's Paks nuclear power plant to scale back operations because the river could no longer provide sufficient cooling water, the same report said. Paks normally accounts for nearly half of Hungary's electricity, according to the report.

Separately, Invictus Energy entered October with its Musuma exploration well in Zimbabwe on track for a November spud, according to Kalkine Media. The company contracted oilfield services group SLB for drilling and well services on the campaign, the same report said.
