Research finds hyperpartisan outlets tie renewable energy disputes to culture-war narratives

Hyperpartisan news outlets frame separate political disputes as part of broader themes centered on government overreach, distrust of institutions and resistance to progressive social and environmental policies, according to research reported by Newsgram and News18.

The study analyzed more than 114,000 videos and 51 million comments posted across Sky News Australia, Fox News, GB News and Rebel News, finding that their YouTube audiences overlap heavily. More than 56% of accounts that commented on Sky News Australia's YouTube channel also left comments on Fox News content during the period studied.

News24, the outlet formerly known as Sky News Australia, brings political narratives from overseas culture wars into Australian contexts, reshaping them to fit local disputes, the research found.

China completes first urban test flight of 4,000-meter-class airborne wind power system

A 4,000-meter-class airborne wind power system completed an urban test flight in Yueyang, in China's Hunan Province, according to CGTN, marking the first time a system of this altitude class has been flight-tested over a city.

The S4000 system lifts lightweight power generation modules into high-altitude winds using a helium-filled platform. Electricity produced at altitude is transmitted to the ground through a tether cable, CGTN reported.

During the flight, the S4000 underwent tests verifying stability control under complex airflow conditions and power generation performance in complex magnetic environments, according to CGTN.

The system's generating capacity, electricity output during the demonstration, and projected cost per kilowatt-hour have not been disclosed.

Flash Joule Heating Converts Scrapped Wind Turbine Blades Into Graphene and Silicon Carbide

A flash Joule heating method can transform decommissioned wind turbine blade waste into silicon carbide and graphene, according to research published in the Cell Press journal Chem Circularity and reported by ScienMag. The process heats composite blade material to approximately 2,000 degrees Celsius within seconds.

In laboratory tests, adding just 0.3% by weight of the recovered materials to polymer resin improved resistance to deformation by 27% under tension and 9% when bent, according to ScienMag.

The method could also carry a lighter environmental footprint than existing recycling routes. Compared with pyrolysis, flash Joule heating could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 83%, and by about 92% compared with chemical dissolution, the researchers found, according to ScienMag.
