DOE Closes USD 1.9 Billion Loan for NextEra's Duane Arnold Nuclear Restart

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has closed a loan of up to USD 1.9 billion to NextEra Energy to finance the restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Linn County, Iowa, according to a DOE announcement. The loan was issued through the department's Office of Energy Dominance Financing (EDF).

The plant ceased operations in 2020, DOE said. Its restart depends on required licensing approvals from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, after which the site would return nuclear generation to the grid.

DOE put employment from the project at nearly 1,500 construction jobs, with more than 450 positions supported once the plant is operating.

The closing is the third nuclear plant restart financed by EDF, according to the department. DOE also said the office has completed four concurrent conditional commitments and financial closings under the Trump Administration.

DOE Closes USD 1.9 Billion Loan for Duane Arnold Nuclear Restart in Iowa

The U.S. Department of Energy has closed a loan of up to USD 1.9 billion to NextEra Energy to help finance the restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Linn County, Iowa, according to Neutron Bytes. The loan came from the department's Office of Energy Dominance Financing.

The plant stopped generating in 2020. NextEra Energy said it plans to bring Duane Arnold back no later than the first quarter of 2029, subject to regulatory approvals.

NextEra Energy has also signed definitive agreements to buy the combined 30% interest held by CIPCO and Corn Belt Power Cooperative, taking its ownership of the plant to 100%, Neutron Bytes reported.

Construction work on the restart will create nearly 1,500 jobs, with more than 450 jobs supported once the plant is operating, according to Neutron Bytes.
