Kimmeridge says US shale oil reserve replacement trails gas

Oil & Gas Journal reported that Kimmeridge sees US shale oil producers struggling to replace reserves despite improved operating efficiency, while natural gas resources remain comparatively abundant.

Kimmeridge reported that cumulative US shale reserve replacement since 2019 averaged about 95% for oil, compared with 126% for natural gas.

Since 2018, US shale producers' SG&A expense per barrel of oil equivalent fell about 48%, while interest expense dropped 46% and exploration expense declined 71%, according to Kimmeridge.

Kimmeridge said weaker oil reserve replacement could make US shale supply less responsive to higher prices over time, supporting WTI and the case for renewed oil exploration.
